The Self Portrait Archive is a participatory community archive centering Bay Area based women, nonbinary, trans, and gender expansive photographers. Through self portraiture, community members explore visibility, identity, self witnessing, performance, memory, desire, eroticism, fantasy, multiplicity, grief, rage, joy, play, and becoming. Together, these images form a collective document of selfhood and provide an ongoing record of radical self witnessing, how we see ourselves and wish to be seen both individually and in community. To add your self portrait to the archive, email hello@photo-saloon.com.

There is no singular way to make a self portrait. Documentary, conceptual, messy, playful, collaborative, performative, quiet, erotic, unresolved, anonymous, or experimental approaches are all welcome.

We especially welcome submissions from Black, Indigenous, Asian, Latine, disabled, immigrant, mixed race, fat, older, queer, trans, chronically ill, working class, and otherwise underrepresented artists and image makers whose perspectives and relationships to visibility, body, culture, lineage, labor, pleasure, survival, and selfhood feel vital to this evolving archive.
