Looking At: Tender by Carla Williams

An ode to Carla Williams’ (@carlajwms) extraordinary monograph, Tender, published locally by Oakland based @tbwbooks. These self portraits, made between 1984 and 1999, were held privately for more than three decades. For me, this body of work invites a reflection on what it means to make images without spectacle or an urgency to share the work, and asks us to reimagine the camera as a companion in our self witnessing.
